I was good at sports at school/early life… in my 20s and early 30s put on work-related and being-a-dad related weight (should avg 11.5 st (73kg) for my height (180cm (5ft 11″), got to 14st (around 90kg). Looked at myself one day and thought, ‘this ain’t me’. Started running. Eventually graduated to martial arts and a few other competitive sports once I got fitter. (Gym because when you hit your 40s, things stop working as they should so strength training becomes more important for injury prevention.) I don’t need motivation anymore really, I’m at the gym 7am in the morning when it opens. I routinely wake at 6am whether I like it or not, so it’s fine. Much prefer that time instead of after work, where I would definitely need motivating.

My initial motivation was being overweight. Also, I don’t like to conform… being an overweight dad in his 30’s is a thing that people just seem to accept (here in the You Breast Cancer Awareness The Grinch Shirt Shirt in contrast I will get this UK), I didn’t like that. My motivation now is longevity and being able to do physical stuff people my age should, but generally can’t, do. Rather than calling it or looking for motivation, I’ve reframed it as being just part of me, what I do. After a year I just wanted to keep on, I got to around 630 days straight and then one day I was busy with stuff and broke the streak. I’m going to preface this with a big caveat: exercise mostly sucks in the beginning. Once you get in basic shape where it’s not a struggle every time, then you’ll start to see the real benefits. In the beginning Nike’s “just do it” is gold – if you think about working out, your mind will convince you not to 9 times out of 10, it’s very good at that. Don’t let it change your mind! Decide on a plan, get ready, and do it.
