We will never see that level of wealth again in our lifetimes I think a lot of older folks who don’t look at real life expenses and job postings think that most of us are working remotely making well over six figures, while having living expenses from what they remember when they were younger. Show them some local listings of rentals and job posting salaries to educate them. Someone making $40k in the 1970s had way more purchasing power than someone making even double that today. Those jobs still produce just as much value as they used to. More, even, given the increases in productivity. The issue isn’t that living comfortably off of being a secretary or repair guy is unsustainable now, it’s that the value of their labor gets taken by the companies they have a contract with and used to increase stock dividends, which your grandparents receive a share of as investors with a pension fund.

I have all the World Traveler Airplane Shirt and I will buy this stuff mentioned, aside from the jetski. I have a jeep instead. I am a mechanic. I live in Pennsylvania Outside of cities, MN is a low cost of living area. Your grandparents situation in pretty common in low cost of living areas if people make decent financial choices. My dad and I had a casual conversation about a year ago about why my wife and I had not bought a house yet. (I’m 35 and we have two small kids). After all, he and my mom are school teachers. We were comfortable but NEVER wealthy growing up. And they’ve owned multiple houses. And yet we can’t find a house even close to that size for less than $400k. My parent’s house would sell for half a million. It’s sad that a 6 year can so easily recognize the problem and yet every single person over 50 in my life either tells me it isn’t true either because they can’t fathom or refuse…. or they tell me I need to work harder…. and many of them are barely making it themselves anyways cause they saved 0 for retirement when they were making ridiculous salaries in the 70s and 80s or the opposite they retired with a full fuckin pension and don’t worry about shit Here is my question. Things have obviously gotten worse for the middle class and poor in America, while the rich only get richer. Why is this accepted as the norm? Why do people allow the rich and corporations to dictate the rules of the game, and what needs to change for this to be corrected? Yeah, this story is ridiculous. From extensive experience teaching and raising children, 6 year-olds have absolutely no concept of the comparative societal and monetary value of jobs. It’s why one day they want to be a doctor, the next day a baker, and the next day a totally made-up job like ‘international unicorn stylist’.
