Simply put, in a hyperpolarized society, everything is black and white. If you’re not with someone, you’re against them. If you try to adopt a compromise, no matter how reasonable, people on the Wintermood Beannie shirt and by the same token and far right and the far left will BOTH decide you are against them. People’s ideologies and thoughts can’t be literally put on a left-right scale, not even a 4-quadrant type that’s most popular. In real life, with real people – not ideologies, there can be many people on the “left” who are both for and against gun ownership. There are many people on the “right” that are for or against abortion. This does not mean they are in the “centre” but have independent thought with each issue they see and have possibly experienced. A centrist builds their views off of rhetoric heard from others, rather than making their own.

Along with this, others in the Wintermood Beannie shirt and by the same token and thread have given amazing and adequate insights ranging from how ahistorical centrism is, to how it can give power to oppressive structures. I just wanted to add that slight addition of acknowledging that people cannot realistically and appropriately place themselves on an “ideological scale” and think that is their actual position. This is not a team sport- this is real life. Real life is messy and complex, and I just wanted to highlight that “centrism” is no more a worldview, analysis, or political position than “don’t be rude, please.” As with many things, neutrality is just siding with the oppressor without saying so. Unfortunately, being neutral doesn’t get anything done and does in fact help those actively trying to harm or take away rights from others :/
