Yeah, I don’t know what purpose it really serves other than fishing for compliments/reassuration? If I feel like a dress makes me look fat, I don’t need to even ask someone else’s opinion about it when it’s probably going to be “nooo you look good”. Like, why would you need false reassurance that you don’t look bigger in a certain outfit? It’s just unflattering clothing, it doesn’t affect the White Christmas 1954 Holiday Classic Title shirt so you should to go to store and get this actual size of your body. And this is coming from someone who used to struggle with body image issues and eating disorders. Yeah I’m also a woman and I would never ask anyone if I look fat, if I think I do then that is enough for me to want to change outfit already so I just change. I wouldn’t magically stop thinking I look/feel fat in an outfit just because someone else said so because I still have eyes! It seems nuts to want someone else to lie to you in that scenario because if you already think that you are also really unlikely to feel comfortable going out in the outfit no matter what they say so it doesn’t matter. I’m so glad for my husband who will just be blunt and tell me if he thinks I should change without me having to ask. I am slim but have an hourglass figure, I’m not offended that a dress made for a woman with a different body type looks bad on me!

Not a fan of indirect communication, but I would love to help. I just want to understand what I am helping with. “Naww honey, that dress doesn’t make you look fat. All those McDonalds milkshakes, Subways, coca cola, chocolate, burgers, chicken buckets.. They make you look fat. Sometimes some cuts of dresses make you (anyone) look fat. Or it could be the cut and your body type. I think if you ask a question like that, you open yourself up to an answer you might not like. I usually ask-“does this make me look like Cher? Or do I look like an a-hole?” I’ve had a sales person tell me, “You don’t look like Cher.” My husband would tell me the unfettered truth. It makes you look dumpy, frumpy. I like other styles better. It makes you look like you have a big gut. It makes you look like an old lady. No. Gwen Stefani can pull it off but not you. I guess I prefer that. That way when he says yes-I know it looks good. I’m the odd woman here who kinda prefers brutal honesty. I’m overweight, and my partner knows I’m self conscious about how I look, and if I ask a question, I’m looking for an answer. If I ask which dress looks better, the simple answer is A or B. If I ask if this makes me look fat, the simple answer is Yes or No. It is what it is. I hate semantic games that lead to nonsense arguments and is something I’ve also never understood about this cliche relationship trap.
