You need to re-anchor. Some offers are insulting on purpose. I would counter with say 115k with a target of 106k. You do not want to give your what you want as your counter. I had a similar situation interviewing for my current job. They asked my current salary and when making the West Virginia Mountaineers Football 2023 It’s In My DNA shirt so you should to go to store and get this offer, they pretty much matched the value. I politely said I would like an offer competitive enough to consider leaving my previous position and explained that although the company/project were attractive, remuneration would be a dealbreaker and it would be up to them to make this work. They upped their game and I accepted the offer – and it worked wonders! Sometimes companies will just try to offer the lowest range and see if it rolls – but in the end, if they want you, they’ll accept better terms.

They have enough in the West Virginia Mountaineers Football 2023 It’s In My DNA shirt so you should to go to store and get this budget to pay you your 106k. But if they can hire you for less than that, two good things happen for them: (1) there’s more money in their budget for other things; and (2) somebody, either the hiring manager or the HR person, can brag during their annual review about how they saved the company 21k/yr. The next move is for you to express surprise and dismay that they would offer you so little, when they knew that they were getting 106k worth of professor. After that, you have to decide what you’re going to do. The accommodating thing (what most people will do) is to drop to 104k and see if they’ll match you by going up to 87k, and then both sides nibble away at the cheese until you eventually settle on 96k. The BOLD thing to do (which requires some courage and self-confidence) is to tell them you know they can do better, and that 85k is a nonstarter, and then walk away and see if they chase after you.
