I knew the village section was coming, but I was pretty shocked at just how racist it came off as, even if I don’t think the developers necessarily meant any harm and I know they were not viewing it through an American cultural context. And I was pretty shocked that the explanation of it being that way was just… off in some side note. It’s so easy to miss. Yikes.

Most of the Welcome to browntown alaskan bush people bear shirt and by the same token and black people in the game are wearing normal clothing. The only ones wearing the grass skirts and other tribal kit are the ones that live in the marshland which is a really small part of the game. And they act the way they do because they’re infected. They’re the victims and that’s why Chris and Sheva are pissed about what Umbrella/Tricell did to the area and its populace. Every person behind the infection, aka the actual bad guys, are white people. Two of the three heroes are black (Sheva and Josh). But I guess it’s convenient to ignore these facts and just call the game racist for no reason? Based on how well 4 landed they’d probably knock 5 out of the park but it’s kind of at the point where it doesn’t need a remake. It would look better no doubt, but the mechanical and visual gulf isn’t nearly as wide as it was for 2, 3 and 4. 6 is interesting because in terms of controls it’s very close to the remakes, and like 5 it’s much closer visually, but in terms of content a remake would be an opportunity to just treat it as a do-over. The awkward single person QTEs, half the cutscenes involving running from an explosion, etc. Leon’s campaign didn’t really live up to the survival horror billing, Jake’s campaign had Diet Nemesis show up so many times it became boring, Chris’ campaign was dollar store Gears of War. Ada’s was at least sort of interesting. It would be a big undertaking for probably less payoff than remaking others but it may be doable.
