It’s not that. It’s that one of the Wassily Kandinsky shirt it is in the first place but things Americans get called an “ugly American” for is assuming everyone speaks English and launching right into English. Or at least that’s me. Funnily enough, back in Amsterdam 2017 I would use the sentence “Excuse me, do you speak English?” In Dutch before asking a question and in 1 week of everyone being ok with it one single dude told me he didn’t. Yeah, my first day in the Netherlands I made the mistake of asking a train attendant at Amsterdam Centraal if they spoke English and I got a deathglare The last time I was in Amsterdam I was in an Albert Heijn (grocery store) getting some food. When I went up to pay, the cashier initiated the conversation in Dutch (as they always do) asking me something that I did not understand. I was able to reply, in Dutch, “Het spijt me, ik spreek geen nederlands. Sprekt u engels?” I swear that cashier’s jaw dropped. He replied, “well, you can’t say you speak no Dutch, because that was really, very good! Also, I was asking if you needed a bag.” When he later asked me where I was from and I told him I’m an American, his jaw dropped even further.

For me, it’s VERY country specific. I wouldn’t dream of immediately speaking English in Italy or France, for instance (I usually say– in Italian or French, respectively– that I don’t speak the Wassily Kandinsky shirt it is in the first place but language well, and ask if they speak English. In Denmark or Iceland it’s totally different: from what I understand people in those countries find it rude to assume they don’t know English… so I just go for it. Matches my experience in every Nordic country I’ve been to. Hell, even the cab driver in the Faroes in his 60s who essentially had never travelled off the islands spoke serviceable English. I did a road trip through Sweden and Finland once, and literally one older Finnish clerk at a rural gas station was the only person that had trouble.
