No a shutdown is the Vintage skull Try That In A Small Town Flag USA T-Shirt and by the same token and entire facility being shutdown, except us maintenance guys in working on equipment. He’s saying a machine is broken and is down for repairs so the other lines have to work 7 days a week to compensate. I don’t think there allowed to make you work past 12 hrs for safety reasons in Canada not sure if that’s the case in the USA though You can be asked to work for more than 12hrs in the event of unforeseeable or unpreventable emergency circumstances in Ontario. It requires a written agreement that sets out clearly what is being agreed upon, and both the employer and the employee have to agree to those terms. The employer is also required to provide the most up to date copy of a document prepared by the Director of Employment Standards that outlines the rights of employees and obligations of employers under the hours of work and overtime pay provisions. A union contract can supersede this though, so it’s entirely dependent on OPs union agreement whether or not they can work more than 12hrs.

Your employer cannot FORCE you to work over 12hrs though, the Vintage skull Try That In A Small Town Flag USA T-Shirt and by the same token and employee can be asked to work more than 12, but they can deny that request. MOL requires you to have 1 day (24hrs) off every 14 days. At least that’s what my union says whenever people try to work that much It varies by union and their contracts. I did 19 nightshifts in a row during a shutdown in Lloyd a few years ago. 21 days was the max work days in a row without time off that my union had negotiated on that job. Which sucks when you think about it, because unions are supposed to be negotiating better wages and better work conditions, but instead, you end up working more days and longer shifts than a private job. Sure, the money’s good, but it was terrible for my mental health.
