As an American, I very much give a fuck and am embarrassed that our own fucking PRISON SYSTEM has become a privatized source of income to the Vintage Idaho Elk And Sunset T-Shirt and by the same token and wealthy. There’s a reason that rehabilitation isn’t the effective goal of American prisons. There’s a reason that US prison cells are little to nothing but cinder block with a metal slab to sleep on. There’s a reason why US prisoners will never see the treatment of those in the Scandinavian peninsula. America is broken, and most of us inside it’s borders don’t see the extent to which we’re all just gears for the wealthy, regardless of whether you’re inside the prison cell or outside of it. Really, there’s enough money in the world to give every person a very minimal room for living, with basic food and healthcare. It should be available to anyone living in the slums or in the streets, basically anyone whose life took a down turn and ended in a destitute situation. To help them get back on their feet, they would get all this in exchange for basic public work – cleaning, painting, maintaining public infrastructure – schools, hospitals, etc. This would constitute a basic life. Then, if you want more, when and if you are ready to try again, you clean your body and mind and prepare yourself for the world out there.

Isn’t this the Vintage Idaho Elk And Sunset T-Shirt and by the same token and same as getting a basic job, and renting 1 room? I’m confused why they can’t already do what you mentioned. How do you “help” them get a job? I’m talking of people who are truly in the gutter – sheer poverty, long time homelessness, addiction, mental problems, etc. The ones you see rotting in the street. Those people have been out of the system for so long they have forgotten the basics of life. If the prison system can maintain criminals for life with basic accommodations, the same should go for those who really need it for other reasons. I believe they try do to that here in So Cal where I live but the addicts refuse to stay clean and refuse to even come to the shelters. Then they all steal each others stuff. It’s really a tough problem I’m not sure if there’s going to be a practical solution anytime soon. You’re essentially saying we arrest them and provide them with a room and basic needs such as prisoners, but that would be difficult justify. In addition, those jobs you mention are available to people – cleaning, painting, maintaining public infrastructure. Not quite sure what you mean by “maintaining public infrastructure”, but that and painting don’t seem to be exactly low skill positions.
