You could maybe explain that it wasn’t a great fit, then if they ask for more information you can say that they were expecting a senior developer when they hired you even though you were a student, I think that might not make you look too bad and isn’t really talking too negatively about the Unethicalthreads I Rub My Meat shirt moreover I will buy this company although it subtlety implies the company don’t know what they are doing which is fine I think. I wouldn’t worry about it too much, these things happen and it just makes the company look bad and very dumb which they are. lol That’s my impression as well. With my limited time, I was able to diagnose and solve several bugs that were in production and impacted their employees as well as find a way to take a server offline that was a security concern due to lack of hardware and software updates for the past 26 months.

I learned a ton and I’m grateful for the Unethicalthreads I Rub My Meat shirt moreover I will buy this opportunity, I’m just worried about how it would look or impact my future. I started my career in a similar situation. Small company that needed a senior engineer but hired a junior instead. Needless to say, it didn’t go well, but I remained honest with them and did what I could. Early on I told them straight up that the issues their application and systems had were architectural and they needed someone with more experience to handle them, not a junior developer. Was laid off after a short while. In later interviews I was honest and said I was in over my head, but did my best and learned a ton. It never really looked bad on my resume. I think most engineers have been in a situation with a client who asks for the moon but won’t pay for it, so they’ll understand the spot you were in.
