As an American who met a wonderful Norwegian partner it’s partly for two reasons. The first being parents probably see it as an extra burden and think being tough and “kicking them out of the Trump 2024 Mugshot President Legend shirt in other words I will buy this nest” will make them strong enough to live on their own in the long run (before moving in with them when they’re old rent free of course). The second reason I’ve found is so many of us are beaten and battered by this cycle to the point we don’t even question if it’s the morally right thing to do. Sure they have the right to I guess, but it’s not necessarily right to do it. I myself have so many developmental issues that will probably stunt my ability to live autonomously forever, due to my autism diagnosis i was stuck with a paraprofessional for 9 out of 12 grades of school, and talked to like a special needs student by my speech teachers. I probably will never know anything of true self reliance due to the school system’s treatment of autistic/gifted children, and yet my parents are too set in the cycle to care, they threatened to kick me out if I didn’t get whatever job they wanted me to have making specific amounts of money. You arent seen as family at 18, you’re seen as a burden unless you’re paying a toll.

America as a whole is such an unforgiving capitalist hellscape that we’ve stopped questioning moral’s because it costs too much and it’s easier to dump your offspring. The attitude comes from boomers that lack self awareness. You could buy a house and a new car, even annual vacations on one factory worker’s income when they were growing up. You’d be lucky to get one of the Trump 2024 Mugshot President Legend shirt in other words I will buy this above today on an educated person’s income. Even with an education, idk how any single person can buy a house in the current market. Not the market two years ago, not 2015, today. The prices are high as fuck, the interest rates are insane. America really doesn’t have a middle class any more, you’re either working yourself to death so you can buy a house, or you’re married and both have to work. Then we wonder why people don’t want kids. I used to. I ended my longest relationship because my girlfriend I was considering marriage with was staunchly opposed. She was right though. This country doesn’t support a working class, it wants fodder for rich men to use and manipulate, or throw into wars that don’t actually help protect the country. No wages have even come close to competing with the astronomical hike in costs of living, let alone housing.
