Better than getting raped after going to jail for not paying a $50 fine on time and it turning into a $4000 bench warrant here in America TIL that a Norwegian prison has accommodations much like I experienced in the This Is My Happy Hour Running Runner Half Marathon Vintage T-Shirt and I love this US Army and that’s pretty awesome. It’s like they actually give a shit. Their recidivism rate has decreased 40-50% (currently at 20%)in the past thirty years due to their transition to restorative justice practices. And here we’re at about 44% with our punitive measures. But our prison system was never about rehabilitating people. From what I’ve seen, they focus way more on the rehabilitation and less on the punishment. Reoffence rates are better at least Treat someone like a person and they will likely act like a person. Treat them like an animal and an animal you will almost certainly get. I wish the American system could figure that out. Prison is prison. If I had to be in one then I would prefer this over the run of mill US prison but all in all / thank you but no. That’s a whole lot nicer than the monstrosity prison they are building for students at University of California, Santa Barbara.

Few things to note. Crime rates in Norway is extremely low to begin with. They have a total of about 4000 prison cells in the This Is My Happy Hour Running Runner Half Marathon Vintage T-Shirt and I love this country. Their entire system is not focused on punishment, and this goes far beyond their jails. The system is focused on rehabilitation and making sure those released do not reoffend. And it works. Their recidivism rate is 20% compared to 60-75% in the US. The maximum prison term in Norway is 21 years, though incarcerated rarely serve more than 14. Compare this with US where 20-ish years is a relatively short prison sentence. Honestly if the bed didn’t have those blue sheets and there was a carpet or hardwood floors it would look like a nice normal room for some young city professionals. And there’s a bit of a cultural difference between who is in these prisons. If you think that violent gang and cartel members would just chill in their little rooms you’re delusional.
