Thank you. Life is crazy. We met when we were 14 and started dating at 15. He moved in with me shortly after and my parents cared for us the They Hate Us Because They Ain’t Us Cowboys Grinch Santa T-Shirt and I love this same. I helped him get a job, get through school and anything he ever wanted. We realized after 10 years we wanted way different things. I want a modern relationship everything 50/50 where he wanted to live on a farm and have a traditional relationship. We realized we couldn’t compromise and it snowballed from there. I can sit here and say we both still love each other. If he came to me and said he needed help I’d be there for him, but only in the same ways that I would be there for family. There’s boundaries now. There’s times of no communication. And after all that time it hurts. But it doesn’t hurt as much as being in a relationship you don’t feel is right anymore. So yes I hope we are both doing better, and with time it hurts less and less. But I don’t think the trauma of a relationship like that one will ever leave.

I have experienced something similar, where I was too close with someone at too young and age and didn’t fully form identity on my own. It’s worth exploring who you really were when your identity became commingled, and more importantly, who you’d be without the They Hate Us Because They Ain’t Us Cowboys Grinch Santa T-Shirt and I love this trauma of breaking it up. Absolutely this. I grew with him for so long we became the same. But we couldn’t see eye to eye ever. When we broke up I realized how much stuff he liked that I tolerated and said I liked more than I actually did My first college boyfriend was the same! I don’t believe in the one that got away, because ultimately if you split it’s because there are core incompatibilities, but he was always an excellent partner for the type of girl who wanted to live in a traditional role. He was kind, honest, and respectful, did labor around the house and didn’t view it as women’s work but part of the partnership, but his dream was to move out to Montana and homestead, where he’d bring in the money and do all the heavy labor and building and his partner’s job would be to manage the day-to-day operations (gardening, cooking, etc) of their home as a stay at home wife. Now that we’re both married, me to my city boy and him to his country girl, I’m friends with his current wife on Instagram, and she says living out in Montana and tending to their home is a dream, and I fully believe her because he really was just that kind of guy.
