You’re more reasonable than everyone else? Its a hollow attempt to claim special privilege, to marginalise anything you don’t agree with, and it’s easily abused by those who are embarrassed or tactical about their actual viewpoints. I’m a centrist. So you must be to the left or right of me if we disagree, and you must be to the extreme if we disagree extensively. The world is so Tribalistic now (stretched afar), Centrists appear distant to both sides. What’s amusing is left leaning people who think they are unmoved Centrists because the Right have gone too far and visa versa! If you were to just insert yourself neatly into the middle, between liberals and conservatives, you wouldn’t be close to that… you’d be a moderate conservative. Because conservatives are far far more radical than liberals are, and there are far far more zealot conservatives than zealot liberals, IMO. Simple answer, each side wants you to pick a side, whether most of them think you should choose their side or not. Looks like you already got the more complicated answers. I’m practically centered in my political beliefs also, so I’m kind in the same boat. That’s just how most people who are negative about it come off to me, at least. Liberals have vilified anyone who doesn’t support their ideology. That’s why you see more and more democrats leaving the party. Because the are not in the center, they are firmly on the Right and whenever they compromise they shift more to the Right.

Cause people only want to you to agree with them… you counter any side you get blasted immediately. No discourse, no diplomacy, just we are correct and your are the The Witch Glow in the Dark shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this enemy. That’s the majority of whats going on now. “Centrist” is synonymous with “status quo.” If you’re voting for centrists, you’re just voting for status-quo politicians. And no one seems to really like the status-quo these days. In my opinion, to be anything over then left wing is to blatantly ignore reality. There is this weird assumption that people make that goes along the lines of “well, everyone disagrees so the most correct position everyone makes should be around the middle, a compromise” but that’s not true. Consider, in history, there was a correct side to things, the compromise was still wrong most often. If you believe in some things are eight and some things are wrong, then you cannot be a centrist. It’s a cowardly position, and one that shows you do not know what you are talking about The vast majority of people do not have beliefs that perfectly align with one political party. Almost everyone agrees with one party on one issue and another party on another issue, whilst wishing they would compromise on a third issue, and wanting an entirely different solution on a fourth. Only deranged, cultists march in lockstep 100% with either far left or far right ideology. Any thinking person looks at the evidence and looks at both sides.
