Being an au pair is ok if you’re doing it through an agency. My second job wasn’t from an agency and they treated me like a slave, and had the The One Where It’s Christmas Friends 2023 Shirt But I will love this balls to guilt trip me too. Anything from making me work with a fever to switching my days off with no notice, and in the end they wouldn’t let me interview for other jobs or view other accommodation when I decided to leave. Don’t forget that most of the time, people will not hire any man for the role as well. So the job option is really only for women unless you get really, really lucky. (Or unlucky if there are some unsavory reasons they prefer a male au pair.) To be fair it’s about $1500/month but at least with the families I’ve interacted with that have them, it includes housing, food, and healthcare. You know the big costs of living. The housing one is a big one, as an au pair is entitled to her (causes I’m pretty sure it’s always young women) own room. So you have to be wealthy enough that you already have an extra bedroom in your house. Never known a family that wasn’t pretty well off to have an au pair.

They had a spare room due to availability of houses in the The One Where It’s Christmas Friends 2023 Shirt But I will love this area (you literally paid more for a 3 bed compared to a 4 bed) but other than that had very little money. They either needed to rent out the 4th bedroom to a lodger (not really possible with 2 young children), or the Mum needed to return to full time work, else they risked losing the house. Daycare was insanely expensive and would cost them more than she would make back at work, but an au pair was cheap enough to work. In the US, you are required to go through a government-approved agency to host or be an au pair. The host family pays a hefty fee to the agency, and part of that amount pays for the au pair’s health insurance for their time in the states. I don’t have one, but when I was talking to my cousin who has one, it sounds like they pay the au pair program a fee to get coverage for them.
