Actually it’s legal to pay aupairs 280 euros/ month. You can do that. In my opinion no one should work for that low income with that amount of work/stress/ fucked up work/life balance. Just because it’s legal doesn’t mean it’s right… As far as I know in that kind of setting the hosts have to pay for language classes and certain other things as well. The 260 are supposed to be pocket money. Of course it could have been a private contract as well where all kind of things are possible I’m sorry, saying “luckily” is so sad here. I understand it could definitely be worse but I hope you both get to a more comfortable place.

Back in Minnesota I was friends with like half a dozen women from south America who were au pairs and their families didn’t treat them all to well. They want a kid, not a baby. I feel this. I dated an au pair for a few years and it was messed up. She had to babysit for other families in the area to make ends meet in addition to her au pair work Dude, I literally used to work full time, and after paying rent and groceries had 500 euros to spare as well. It’s called working. I loved being an au pair. Lived in Paris, babysat maybe 4 evenings over two years, my regular hours were 3-7pm Monday to Friday, I had a whale of a time. The problem is when people claim it’s an au pair pidition, and it’s not – 30 hours is usually the max per week.
