Used to get these all the time in the garden – our garden was a perfect wilderness for wildlife, magnificent creatures. Fascinating to watch, kinda prickly when they pinch (I used to pick them up and move them around the garden and they didn’t always like it!) and also super interesting when the males fight. Saw one back at my childhood home in 2019 and was so excited because I hadn’t seen one since probably the 00’s. Definitely look after these little dudes! Stag beetle larvae take like 7 years to mature in rotting wood. Nobody leaves wood to rot anymore, all gets cleared away One got stuck in my room last summer and was the most terrifying experience of my life. It was trying to find its way out (I had the window open) and it kept flying around the room with its prong out. If you haven’t seen it’s prong, go google it. Think it’s hidden beneath the wings, my lord it’s long, jagged and hooked. You’d think if he got you with it you would be his slave forever. I’m 6ft, weigh about 110kg and the large majority of that is muscle. When this thing flew towards me, prongs blazing. I ran out my room screaming like a little bird.

You could put a saddle on them, and they fly!! Not seen one in years! (SW London) last time i did, i was at a mates house with his patio doors open and two flew in, and then i think i had a panic attack. I live in South Wales, UK and I had a large black beetle fly in front of me and landed on the road a few years ago, thankfully the road where I live is quiet and it scuttled off under a hedge, it was a sight to see, I did think “what is that” initially but didn’t do anything to harm it.
