So being in similar situations before this is actually kind of a win, granted not as obvious as getting the title and raise right away, but it is letting you build the experience and be able to show on a resume where you were an “interim manager” Do you best to say “I think it would be best if we agreed on a time frame to discuss this again so I can learn the ropes and we all know when to sit down and discuss the possible promotion again” something like 3-6 months. There is no protection. It’s sort of a see how you both fit situation. But it sounds like u are being put in as a stop gap as opposed to the guy. Otherwise why not promote you. I’d also do some homework on why the other dude was fired. Get a graduated contract. Determine the final salary they would move you to at the new position. The title has some value on its own, just not with your current employer. I treat the title value as college tuition. The title is a degree in a sense. At certain points in my career, I took less pay for the title, but this was only due to industry hiring requirements being higher than my education level, but the title nullifies those requirements.
