I don’t understand this. I loved Colour of Magic. Why do people think it’s a bad place to start? The pub scene, the The Badgers Grinch lives here Christmas shirt in addition I really love this intro of Ankh-Morpork, the real world analogies… what’s missing? Colour of Magic is a bad place to start not because they are bad books, but because there are better starting points where his world is much closer to it’s final form. After the Rincewind books the tone becomes much lighter, the technology level changes from high fantasy to steampunk fantasy, and the humour goes from Terry Gilliam absurdist to Monty Python silly. Given that almost none of the characters in those books carry over to the rest of the series (and those that do are extremely different), Mort or Guards, Guards are much better starting points. i think it’s the disconnected series of events that Colour of Magic consists of and maybe the ultimate stakes being the possible ending of the world.

once you’ve gotten past the The Badgers Grinch lives here Christmas shirt in addition I really love this first few books, the Disc just isn’t in peril as widely. at most, it’s the fate of a small kingdom with a name like a chest infection or a single city at most. sure, the DEATH books get existential. hard not to when a main character is a manifestation of the metaphysical, but mostly the scale of things is smaller. there are also some things that just don’t continue in future entries, like the magical significance and avoidance of the number that is 4 plus 4, a focus on the games that gods literally play with the lives of men (and how seriously those gods are taken), and the fact that Unseen University is very much in it’s dead mens’ pointy shoes days. Colour did a lot to establish the absolute ridiculousness of the world, but it’s not a book i’ve gone back to. perhaps i should, just to really know why. it’s entirely possible i’m speaking out of my ass here. Going Postal was also my introduction to Discworld! It is my “obviously heavily read” book on the shelves and was the only book I actually put post-it notes in to mark lines/scenes that I really enjoyed. I still remember how my 10th grade English teacher took a shine to me because of how excited I was about his books. He was one of my early inspirations for writing, even though I eventually gave up.
