I had family friends who moved from SA to Florida, not sure which part. They relocated to grow their business. Yes and no. The thing is, it’s the casting directors’ decision. They clearly want some queens every season who are not quite ready but, maybe have potential, are charismatic, or can bring some drama. If you are cast, then yeah, bring your best, but maybe the best isn’t quite there yet due to inexperience or lack of funds. Didn’t Heidi way exceed expectations by being so Charismatic it carried her way later in the season than Producers thought she’d go. I feel like there’s usually one queen a season that almost only has star power in Ru’s eyes and he wants to make them a star (adore/Trinity, Pearl, chichi, etc) and I feel like Heidi was the pet project for season twelve Basically every queen who has been on the show says once you see yourself on TV it’s realky eye opening and , you make changes to your makeup etc… Sure queens should come come in with an idea of who they are, but I don’t think they have to have it all figured out yet. Artists always grow and change. Exactly. I’m tired of these young queens coming on the show with no real experience (ex. sugar and spice) and only paying big designers to make their looks. Practice, perform, fine tune your art, take a damn sewing class, and come when you’re ready to compete against the other best contenders. This is why I think All Star seasons are much more entertaining. Everyone there is seasoned and ready.

There is no objective point or scoring system and you don’t have to prove you’re the best at anything to get in like you would with the Olympics. The casting call is literally just being lucky enough to catch the producer’s attention with a video tape before they lock down the cast for the year.

Casting Directors and Producers who want drama. You have legends like Raja or Sasha Colby, who have been doing drag since before the wheel was even invented. Queens that have refined and elevated their drag over the years and are mostly just doing Drag Race as a victory lap. You have young queens who had polished aesthetics, but were rough around the edges when it came to certain talents that Drag Race requires, like Violet or Tyra. They failed at most comedy challenges but impressed with their dedication to their craft and their immense potential. You have queens who were very talented in the acting department, who had refined a persona but their drag itself was very rough, like Jinkx. When the winners are all varied in terms of talents, aesthetics and personalities, then the cast has to be as well. Some queens are not quite there yet in terms of polished drag, but they have the charisma and talent to be a star. Sometimes it doesn’t even take much for things to click in place, and a crash course on the show can do wonders. Giving them the opportunity can really help out in the long run. A queen who is too broke to get nice clothes might be able to increase her booking fee by going on the show and becoming a fan favorite, and then the issue fixes itself, like Mo Heart.
