For example, “parlez-vous anglais” in Quebec was invariably met with a smile in Quebec last summer. I think your way is the right way, and your friend’s is rude. Or if not rude, certainly less effective at engendering good will from locals. Plus, it perpetuates the dumb, rude American stereotype. It is really amazing how far a few words of the local language can get you (which it sounds like you recognize, but your friend doesn’t). Finally, your friend will never learn if she doesn’t try. Doing my best and learning by trial and error has taught me enough Italian, French, and German to get by mostly without English in places where those languages are spoken. I never would have picked up that basic proficiency if I had just spoken English at everyone I encountered.

Even in France, known for a reputation of hating people like your friend, I’ve never met someone so in need of being efficient that they won’t tolerate a few words of bad French effort. I always as if people speak English in the local language. I don’t actually speak any of the local languages but I find people tend to respond better when I at least kinda make an effort. I absolutely would ask first. It’s polite – puts them in an awkward situation if they can’t and it’s presumptuous to assume. Disagree with your friend here. People like to practise their English, and its a small gesture that shows you are not some arrogant asshole American moaning about the lack of non-dairy creamer. Hmm. When I was in France for a week, I tried to speak French as much as possible, despite knowing literally only 7 words and 3 phrases. So even in a panic situation when we missed our train, I ran around the station asking everyone if they spoke English (in French) looking for help. I think it’s impolite to assume everyone speaks YOUR language when you’re outside of YOUR country. Would you think it’s rude if someone came up and just started speaking German/Spanish/Finnish/whatever else in America? I guess maybe not rude but certainly baffling and frustrating.
