One of the Never underestimate a woman hockey and loves oilers signature shirt it is in the first place but first phrases I learn in any language is “hello, I am sorry I don’t speak _____. do you speak English?” American in Germany here. Most don’t actually mind either way, but sometimes it’s a lose-lose situation no matter what. I’ll ask people “sprechen sie (or sprist du) English?” And they look at me like “duh, of course i do,” as if I’m implying they are uneducated. But like others have mentioned, if you just speak English right off the bat, you’re the arrogant American who thinks they should speak your language. I’ve learned to just immediately say hello or good afternoon first, so they don’t waste their time speaking German to me, and have to repeat themselves in English. If English is not the local language, you absolutely ask first if they speak it. Anything else is rude and entitled.

People will be able to speak English to differing levels. Asking in the Never underestimate a woman hockey and loves oilers signature shirt it is in the first place but native language gives them a chance to at least prepare that the next thing you say will be in English. Plus it shows that you are at least making an effort, ask your friend how she would feel if a stranger came up to her whilst she was at home and just started speaking a foreign language. In general people enjoy practicing or showing off their language skills. I absolutely ask first. I try my best not to be the stereotypical American that is so ethnocentric that they can’t pick up a few phrases in the native language, such as “Hello, do you speak English?” And if they don’t, there’s always Google translate. I don’t hesitate to try speaking romance languages if Google is telling me what to say. Worst case they just ask to see my phone lol. Travel etiquette #1: learn, at the very least, “do you speak English” in the language of the country you’re visiting . I would never just unload on them in English
