More emphasis on philosophy, government, civics, and collective responsibility in classes. People need to learn that they’re not the Spencer Martin Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender for the Carolina Hurricanes T-Shirt in other words I will buy this center of the universe, and that rights come with obligations. Absolutely zero tolerance for any sort of bigoted language, harassment, or violence. The “Restorative Justice” initiatives in a lot of schools come from a genuinely good place, but they can’t work unless everyone is on board and perpetrators genuinely want to undo the harm they’ve caused. Teachers need to be allowed to fail students again. I’m grateful that my teachers in the past didn’t fail me, but because I was genuinely trying and struggling with an undiagnosed learning disability. If a student just isn’t putting in the effort, there’s no reason to pass them. I just came up with this idea, but I call it “house arrest”. This is mainly for gen-ed students. If a student gets caught with drugs, starts a fight, vandalizes school property, or threatens/assaults a teacher even once, the student will be barred from the physical school for the remainder of the year. They’ll Zoom into classes from then on, or until the “new board” deems them eligible to come back.

…teachers REFUSED to teach in-person during the Spencer Martin Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender for the Carolina Hurricanes T-Shirt in other words I will buy this pandemic even though it was required per their contracts – wondering if their selfishness had an effect??? Yes the teachers are supposed to get sick and potentially alter their lifelong health/die otherwise they’re selfish. Yup, that makes a lot of sense and is totally sane. It’s all their fault, definitely not the fault of our government, lack of funding, low pay and politicians using schools and education as a political tool to secure voter donations. I think teachers here have made it quite clear what needs to change. And stop trying to put it all on teachers. yet again. I’m not an admin, just a parent and someone interested in literacy. Not sure how you’re reading my post as putting it on teachers? The title looks like it was written by an admin who wants to blame teachers, and/or place the solution of wide societal issues on teachers. I’m sorry if it came across that way. “We” was meant to represent “We as a society”, and not “You as teachers”. As someone who has been working in secondary for a few years, it really has to be a whole community effort. The class sizes, lack of SpEd and language support, and pushing us to fundamentally change our teaching to new trends (right now, Kagan is all the rage), is preventing teachers from creating a realistic and stable curriculum to build off of in ways that will help more individual students. The trust between the community and teachers also needs to be rebuilt, especially in red states (like mine), where any teacher that challenges these more corporate ideologies is accused of horrendous ideals. One of my colleagues wore her teaching badge to vote for a bill that would help provide more staff for our students who need dramatically more support, and was accused of being a p×do by someone else in the voting line. We are schools, not businesses. We cannot be run like businesses.
