Personally I promised myself at a young age that I would never drink alcohol due to a few incidents with my dad, who wasn’t an alcoholic but could get very violent when he was drunk or high. Only made an exception once when I was going through a fairly difficult time. I don’t regret my decision in the slightest. Sure, some people consider me boring because I don’t get drunk at parties, but most people are understanding. I also personally feel like the people who consider me to be boring aren’t the type of people I want to hang out with anyway. Plus alcohol tastes fucking disgusting and I don’t know how anyone could drink it for the taste and not just to get drunk, but maybe I have some kind of weird genetic condition like that thing with cilantro. If anyone asks, I usually just say I don’t drink for personal or moral reasons or if I know they’re going to be really pushy sometimes I just lie and say it’s for religious purposes to really confuse them.

A simple “no thanks, I don’t drink” should be enough. If some one wants to press and you want to tell them more that’s up to you. I have a friend who also has an addictive personality and a family history of addiction and he also doesn’t drink (we will occasionally try a drink someone has just to taste it or have a single cider or something maybe a couple times a year but that’s it). Even with an activity we do that drinking is common he doesn’t and no one gives him shit. A lot of people eventually realize that if they do drink they need to cut back. I have cut back recently, wasn’t really at a point where i had a “problem” but i really had no good excuse for having a drink every day.
