Every person of Indian descent that I have ever met have been just the Skyy Moore American football wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs T-Shirt in addition I really love this kindest people. Glad you’ve got some really kind ones near you! Try going to a party where the hosts are an Italian guy and Indian woman, they provide to go boxes and you’re expected to take food home. I was a very skinny kid, despite eating a lot, and my best friend at the time was Greek. You can imagine how much I was fed at his house. Agree – I work in big tech and we have many, many Indian coworkers and peers. They are so kind and so hardworking, it seems like a wonderful culture to be a part of. I’m sure it’s not all roses but the folks I’ve met have really left an impression on me Langars and Sikh gurdwaras are great if you’re in need of a free meal. I’ve been once as a part of a world religions class in uni and it was a wonderful experience. No obligation to attend the service (though we did), no one tries to push beliefs on you, it’s just an open community kitchen for all to share a free meal. And the food is amazing and flavorful too. And as noted, it’s all vegetarian, not because eating meat is necessarily against Sikh dietary restrictions, but because they want to make sure that langars can accomodate as many people from as many faiths and cultures as possible. Truly great people. Edit cause I wanted to add some more info: It really is an “all are welcome” arrangement. No one is turned away and people from all races, religions, creeds, social statuses are all treated equally. Owing to this equality aspect, when you go to a langar, everyone eats on the floor so no one can be seen as above or below anyone else. Learning about Sikhism in that class was definitely a highlight and I encourage everyone to learn more and maybe even visit a gurdwara one day

I’ll just say as a non Sikh, with a lot of Sikh friends from childhood, that gurdwaras will give you free meal but they are mostly volunteer run organizations and you should try and help out by doing some dishes or something. Sewa ( service ) was a big deal for my friends – meal was only secondary – when they went. Edit : and I am not gate keeping anyone nor will anyone there stop you if you eat and leave. That’s the Skyy Moore American football wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs T-Shirt in addition I really love this point of langar as far as I know. Of course! I imagine that if you ask to volunteer serving meals or something they’d love hearing that, especially from a non-Sikh. Though, I have no clue if the gurdwara community would accept the help or politely decline. But if you’re willing and able it’s always great to want to give back. But yes, I never felt obligated to do anything at the meal. When our class spoke to our guide after, he was just happy we were there.
