I owned a Renault Encore — the Shrimps Is Bugs Shirt it is in the first place but hatchback version. It was a fantastic small car. You could lay the rear seats down and get an asston of cargo in it. 36MPG with highway miles. Survived a hailstorm with barely a dent because the body panels were so thick. Ugh. Those cars. Some how my parents and uncle got a few Allances cheap in Texas a long time ago. They needed a few of them as parts cars. I remember them breaking often. I worked as safety crew at a racetrack and they had a Renault LeCar challenge race. They offered a race ready edition of the car and watching them zoom around the track like a herd of turtles was kinda fun. Then an inexperienced driver rolled his car in an outside turn. We waited for the pack to go by and ran across to check on the driver. It was upside down and fuel was spilling, we got the motor shut off but the electric cooling fan still running and making an awful racket. They put me in front of the car with a fire extinguisher while the got the driver out. I was on edge but nothing happened and the driver was ok. My moms stepmother was begging my grandfather to buy one for my moms first car. She thought that it was prestigious because it was French.

My dad had one of these back in the Shrimps Is Bugs Shirt it is in the first place but 80s. He said you could see the road moving through cracks in the floor, even when it was new… What really hurt it in the USA was the change in emissions standards that reduced engine power multiple times, eventually down to ~50HP. It definitely wasn’t a clunker like the Yugo (it really was just a rebadged Renault 5, which was pretty successful everywhere else it was sold), but when companies like Honda and Toyota were out there (successfully) making more powerful and more fuel efficient cars with equal/lower emissions, it was always going to be hard to compete. I remember thinking those were really cool when I was a kid- of course I knew better even then. My dad had a mint green Fiat 124 coupe in that era- paper thin door panels and thin seats (it was a 70’s model). I remember thinking that was the cooler. But the ultimate for was a W123 Benz. I must have been the only pre teen kid around with a picture of a cream Benz 300D sedan next to my Farah poster The Renault 5 Turbo, which was a ‘special edition’ made so Renault could enter a car into the WRC (you had to produce a certain number of street legal versions) was actually really cool, and still looks aggressive as fuck
