If you were to say “in three months I want the title and the pay, and I want it in writing.” and they’re all “cool, sounds good.” what winds up happening is you’re underpaid for a higher role for three months, they find an external hire, and you get a pat on the back at the end of the three months having provided the necessary work for less than they should’ve been paying, become bitter, etc, etc. This could go several different ways, but the red flags are already there that this won’t go how you’d like it to. Nope. The pay comes with the work. If they don’t feel like you’re doing the job well they can remove you, but they don’t get a reduced rate while you step up into the new role.

I had a company do this and I was too young and dumb to know better. I got something similar, and 6 months later, I have no title change. I did get twice the regular annual scheduled raise, though. I was told that the promotion would come afterwards, so my salary increase is calculated off of my now higher base salary. And I went from being individual contributor to managing two people. I kept substantial amount of my duties in terms of their importance to the company, but they occupy only about 40% of my time. The rest has been distributed to my two team members and managing them does not take a lot (I’m very off hands, millennial “do your job and we’re good” manager). So I did end up with less to do and more marketable responsibilities. And honestly, it was worth it, despite no promotion and related raise quite yet.
