If I was going to do something I think I’d say 20-25% of your take-home for keep, then put that in a savings account and not give it over one day unless it’s for a house, education etc I just took ownership of one of the Save Motor Boating Breast Cancer Pink Ribbon shirt But I will love this bills. Think it was internet? I didn’t mind doing this and appreciated the honesty of seeing how much something actually cost. Felt like I was contributing to the household too and learnt how bills work, rather than feeling like my parents were just taking money from me. Same. I came from a single parent upbringing where there was not a lot to go around, so my inclination is to give them everything I didn’t, but a major thing I didn’t get was sound financial advice, so that’s the balance I want to strike 🙂 Do they understand savings and stuff? Whatever they would be paying in rent has to go into savings or investments etc but they need to choose it and understand it. Fair enough to charge for food and split heating etc.

Our family rule was 1/6 net pay. Which was brutal for my mum when my brother was on a YTS at £26.50/week and she’d give him £10/week pocket money. He tried to get her to just give him the Save Motor Boating Breast Cancer Pink Ribbon shirt But I will love this £6 instead, but she was a stickler. Taught him some good habits. She put on a clean pinny on payday when I started working in my first job – IT. She also saved some of it and gave it back to me as it was so much. I feel like between £300 to £400 is reasonable, maybe start at £300ish and then if they get a pay rise they pay more (it’s what my parents did). The thing is you can’t go charging them too much as otherwise they will just leave straight away and go for a houseshare as its so much worse living at home compared to a houseshare/flat of their own.
