Everyone focuses on “people are ridiculous for freaking out” but it just cracks me up that they didn’t think to put a wedding ring on her. The movie references this very briefly, but the reason she didn’t have a ring wasn’t oversight or some explicit thing. It was pure economics. If she didnt have a ring, they could use the same arms that all of the Barbie’s had. Aside from it obviously being fine if she weren’t married, it’s worth noting that you can be married without wearing any sort of jewelry. Like, nowhere in the law does it say that married people shall wear a ring. Conservative parents and their kids were free to pretend that Midge was a good married twentysomething Christian lady. Just like I choose to pretend she’s a big atheist slut who got pregnant by a sperm donor and plans to raise the kid with her nonbinary partner who just won a Nobel prize. See, it’s easy! Also it’s for married pregnant women to not be wearing their rings near the end of the pregnancy because their fingers swelled up and the rings would no longer fit.

This is a relief. I always had vague recollections of there being a pregnant Barbie when I was really little, that you could pop the stomach off to get the baby out. I remember this doll and had wanted it bad as a kid, but by the time I had gotten the nerve to ask, they were already removed from the shelves due to the controversy.
