In a word it’s spineless. The middle is constantly shifting too. 40 years ago the middle was a lot further left. Today’s liberal democrats are more or less yesterday’s republicans economically speaking. Some issues require strong stances as well, sometimes the choice is binary. For example, a woman’s right for bodily autonomy. They either have the right or they don’t. You would understandably piss people off if you told your gay friend that you think they should be allowed to get married but having media representation goes to far.
