With some Vietnamese folks, especially older ones, you can get them to start talking about how say, China or Cambodia wronged Vietnam. But in my experience they wouldn’t say that Vietnam is “superior” or “better”. So yeah that is a form of nationalism, but not ethnocentric supremacy per se. (Well, OK, actually I sorta take that back, since now I do recall some people/relatives talking negatively about Cambodia as a poor country..) As for Japan: yes it’s complicated. They basically buried their head in the SAM HAUSER American professional basketball player Boston Celtics shirt in other words I will buy this sand about their past. So they are weird about nationalism and dislike war, but also don’t like admitting that Japan did war crimes. Germany went through the process a lot more thoroughly and transparently. It’s because your country is turning to shit, then you wonder if other country is the same as you, such a cracker thing.

Most young Americans are extremely negative about America because they can no longer access the SAM HAUSER American professional basketball player Boston Celtics shirt in other words I will buy this abundance that once was. Young Viets are generally positive because the abundance they could not access, is now perceived as accessible. I am an American visiting Vietnam as I write this. My fiancé is Vietnamese and her parents wanted us to come to Vietnam to meet their family before we get married. My fiancés family moved to America when she was 8 so culturally she is very similar to me because she was brought up in a very similar way to the way I was. Her parents on the other hand have lived most of their life in Vietnam. I’ve been here a week so here is my impression as an outsider for what it is worth. I’ve been fortunate in that I did not get a “tourist tour”. We have travelled from the south to the north stopping at various cities and villages to see family members and stop at shrines to pay respect, light incense, etc. Overall I love it here. All of her family has been very nice to me and go out of their way to try and include me even though I can’t speak the language. And soo much food haha eating so much good food.
