I know ZILCH about deckhands, but it could be that they are from a culture where everyone is expected to always be actively helping each other even if it slows things down. Some Asian countries are sorta like this, for instance. Then they just aren’t used to doing it your way. I’ve seen deckhands on Asian ships come into port and they cannot do a task on their own. Or they will attempt to pull a line on deck and then yell down to us that it’s too heavy and then wait for others to come. Maybe you’re right and it’s a social thing in that they don’t want to do it alone. That’s perfectly valid for other industries as well.
