There’s a reason it is extremely commonplace for teachers to buy their kids supplies out of their own pocket. They become a de facto third parent who gives them the things they cannot get at home, like love, acceptance, support, food, advice, etc. Their empathy is too strong. What about our bills? What about the kids? Where would they go? Do you know how many children only eat at school, who use school as an escape from abuse? Teachers won’t do this because they morally can’t wrestle it. And that’s the problem – you have all of these caring, empathic people held hostage to the situation. And then it’s easy to say “Do this, do that. Welp, you’re not doing it, so clearly now it’s your own fault.”

YOU write your legislators. I’m tired. Of course they did, because the gun nuts have been pushing turning teachers into armed security guards ever since Newtown. These staff members probably feel some guilt that they couldn’t be the “good person with a gun”. But mass shootings don’t work like the movies. There’s no scary music to warn you that the shooter is coming. By the time you hear the gun shots, six people are already dead. At any rate, I’d like to think that gun shots would trigger staff members to get their kids to safety, not inspire them to be Rambo in hot pursuit of the killer.
