Haha yeah a lot of my family is from up there. NYC and Florida are definitely really important places for Puerto Ricans Chicago also has a large contingent. In lieu of a parade during Covid they drove around with flags and families in trucks and cars. Lifted my spirits considerably even as I’m not PRian. In the world… I live in Madrid, Spain and it’s the same deal. Rich people buy the city center for airbnbs and regular people are forced to live further away from the city center Pretty much. But I am not sure how it is in the rest of the USA, but I think in PR the beaches are public by law. But as long as there is a way to go to the beach somehow, they can block it there. Next time that happens, say “ok”, find the nearest door, enter it, exit it, and then ask them “okay, I’m here – now what?”.

So it’s does not surprise me that people can’t figure out Puerto Rico is part of the US. But… how do people not know about Alaska???? That is like one of the biggest jokes about the USA buying it from Russia for dirty cheap and finding gold and oil. Do people not look at maps???? Unclear if sarcastic, but people from New Mexico have a problem with people thinking they are from Mexico, and not the US The problem is that Mexico is called Mexico, when it should be called New New Mexico, being newer than New Mexico. And also I feel like some people think Baja California is in the states. But that’s not as common of a mistake I don’t think NM should change their license/ID to “US State of New Mexico” like how the District of Columbia changed to Washington, DC — it was too much to expect people to know what DC stands for. Makes me now think that someone from Baja California, especially a white-looking Mexican, would actually pass as a Californian/American lol Citizens of PR are citizens of the US, but not currently a citizen of a US state. State independent constitutional policies apply, but they don’t get to vote for seats in Congress or the president (president definitely not because it’s the electoral college who really votes for president and PR has no EC votes as it’s not a state; in Congress I think there’s some special representative voting or something, I don’t quite remember). SCOTUS should still be the highest court for PR, with court circuits for territories like the rest of the states (I’m no expert on this so don’t take my word for granted)
