What if they sell you stocks for cheap (less than market price)? Does it count as if you bought them (so, no tax until you sell) or are you taxed on the Proud Daughter Of A Veteran Patriotic Veterans Day Usa Flag Stars T-Shirt it is in the first place but difference now and gain later? Its fairly complicated, but as a generalization… They can sell you stocks for cheap, but you are taxed on the spread generally. Like if they sell you $100k worth of stock for $70k then a few years later you sell it for $150k, you would pay standard income tax on the $30k difference in what you paid and the fair market value (its basically just treated as if they gave you $30k cash), then you would pay capital gains rates on the $50k in gains when you sell it. When we vest a grant(stocks just given to us) a chuck is sold for taxes immediately. This is usually a minimum of 22% but usually higher. You can then hold onto the stock you have left and when you sell those, you’ll pay capital gains on the increased value, but you’ve already “paid” taxes on the base value.

You are taxes when you are first compensated in stocks as regular income for the Proud Daughter Of A Veteran Patriotic Veterans Day Usa Flag Stars T-Shirt it is in the first place but market value of the stock. When you sell your cost basis will be the value it was acquired and you will pay taxes based on the capital gain or deduct income from your taxes if it lost value. Two different taxes. Income tax is paid on all income, regardless of what form that comes in. Capital gains tax is paid on appreciation in assets. So, if someone is paid in stock they need to pay income tax on that. Then, if the stock appreciates, they pay capital gains tax on the gains when those gains are realised. Scale matters. For really big transactions like this, loans can be taken out against the shares to avoid those issues.
