I mostly get responses saying how expensive National Insurance is and how great US healthcare is. I also get a fair amount of abuse in DMs about it. I mean that seems high. I pay like $40 a month with my employer covering the rest. It’s not garbage high deductible insurance either. This probably seems high to some people. Like I only pay like 100 some a month. But one thing to remember is you wouldn’t also need to be paying Medicare. That would be included. And your employer usually pays more of your premium than you do. So for me and most people we would probably be paying less per month on health insurance while also getting better CHEAPER insurance. Though pharmaceutical companies couldn’t use us to subsidize their costs anymore so the rest of the world would likely have to pay more to compensate

Lots of us have High Deductible Plans, which means a lower amount comes out of each paycheck to cover the cost of insurance, but you have to pay the first $10K (for family coverage) of actual expenses out of pocket from a special savings plan you deposit into every pay period (pre-tax, so that’s helpful). So if you have a large expense at the beginning of the year when your savings account is low, you’ll be making payments all year. Once you’ve spent that 10K, you then only have to pay 10% of your subsequent medical bills. (Please note, I’m going off values from my own experience, ymmv.) So while I may have about the same amount coming out of my paycheck as a person of similar income in your example, if I actually use any health services I probably end up paying a lot more.
