Obviously there are other factors to consider, and the people in charge of that sort of stuff in the US just wouldn’t go for it in general, so it’s purely an academic exercise. Insurance companies are unlikely to just go “okay, we’ll all go away”. National Insurance covers the NHS, welfare, state pensions et al, so it’s not just healthcare. I’ve never had healthcare insurance in the US, so for all I know, the UK system of National Insurance would be far more expensive for some people. If you can find your rough income on this list, that’s what you’d be paying instead of your health insurance. Obviously there’s nothing else to pay in terms of ‘you cover the first £1,000’ or similar (I forget the name; it’s known as ‘excess’ over here in motor insurance). It might be a saving for some people – and, of course, it covers your state pension / welfare also.

National Insurance Contributions: £0 /month ($0) (Income too low to require contributions – this is the Pol Cat PL shirt also I will do this threshold level of zero) So yeah, that’s some figures. For that amount per month, you can have all the heart transplants, ambulance rides, amputations, car accidents and willy adjustments you want, and you won’t have to pay anything other than a few quid for prescriptions (and even then, that’s completely free in some parts of the UK). I also get private health insurance in the UK. My employer pays for it but it’s only £1,200 a year. But if i did pay for it, all in all with both private and public, I’d still spend less than the average American I reckon. I’d be really interested to see some comments from our American cousins to see how these figures compare to their current insurance plans.
