It’s like, if women were known to snap other couples’ babies’ necks on occasion (but the Philadelphia Flyers Hockey 1967 Logo shirt and by the same token and majority of women never did that, despite a minority of women trying to when they thought they could get away with it), and you were walking through the park past a parent with a baby in a stroller, and when they saw you coming they shielded the stroller with their body. And this happened basically every time you came across a lone parent with their baby. How would it make you feel? Perhaps something like “I’m not going to snap your baby’s neck! Only an unfeeling monster would do something like that!”? Yet despite that, you know the statistics: you know they’re not wrong to take precautions, because there absolutely are women out there that would snap that baby’s neck in a second, given the chance. How would you feel knowing that they think you (yes, you specifically!) might want to do that to their baby? How might it wear you down over time, to where you no longer even think in words “you have nothing to fear from me”, you just mentally give a defeated sigh, knowing this will never change, and that realistically there’s no way it can change. There’s no way–ever–for them to know you’re not a monster, so their fear is justified, even though it’s totally misplaced. You just have to live with it. Because that’s pretty much what it feels like for me.
