I work at a big company and our “senior” devs are shit devs. The juniors learning from them are learning terrible practices. For example, our senior devs have no problems with writing 400 line methods and not automating a single aspect of their workflows. My point being is that good mentorship/learning isn’t guaranteed in a big company either. I’d say to OP: take the Park high school alumni class of 1987 shirt and I love this job if you believe you can self learn on the job. If not, still take the job for the pay but be actively job hunting I’ve done it, my current company is that way and it sucks. Typically a company that’s gonna hire a new grad as a solo dev doesn’t understand the work that goes into developing anything, so you end up pushing out polished garbage to please them and their deadlines. I quite enjoy working on my own so I’d be tempted, depending upon what the project was, If I felt that I could realistically achieve it on my own.

I did that as a new grad (and then joined very small teams with no mentor for the Park high school alumni class of 1987 shirt and I love this next 2 jobs) because the market was really bad (dotcom crash). I feel it set me back a few years career wise. It’s horrible. You own everything you write. The benefit of working on a team is that everyone takes ownership of the code. Nothing gets shipped until someone else reviews it. If you’re the only dev and if you mess up (which will inevitably happen soloing) then everything falls into your lap. Also the learning opportunities are extremely slim as you have hardly anyone technical to bounce off of and learn from. This is further amplified for new grads without any experience away from academic exercises. Interesting. Thanks for bringing this up. I’m actually going to negotiate equity soon. Is 10% a good number? Seems like there are 2 founding members and only 1 is vaguely technical.
