That’s how it is at the club i go to anyway. If you know people there you can still attend in the meantime though but youll pay a bit more for drinks Normally if you don’t have a membership you can simply pay on the day to use the club. Either that or attend with a friend with a membership. The local working men’s club here is a dive best avoided. If I ever want to go in I usually just say my Grandad’s name (a weekly regular) and all is well. Yes, social clubs are members only, but people can sign you in. It’s a licensing issue; they’re not pubs so the tax on drinks works differently. I’ve been going to a social club with my mate recently, it’s about 10 mins from where i live, i didn’t know i needed a membership either but i just walked in with him and nobody cared tbh, they all spoke to me and were lovely and i have been back a few times since, if i keep going i’ll get a membership but from what i read there’s like a whole voting process and you need to be recommended by 2 or 3 people who are already a member and then you need to be accepted in and all this stuff ahaha £15 for a years membership at mine and go in 6/7 times a year solely to play snooker. Some social clubs are great and welcoming, mine isn’t one of them and some crazy characters who live in the 70’s run it!

The membership in March thing seems to be a standard for “old school” type places – a couple of my local shooting clubs do the Original retro Thank You For The Memories Vintage T-Shirt Apart from…,I will love this same, you can pay the dues at any time but it only takes you till March, it’s not done pro-rata in any shape or form. Used to go drinking in one round the corner from my grans when i was 18..they were members so were my mates parents so we always went in with them till we got our own memberships ..full of old people but was cheap beer for a Tuesday night on the pool table an game of darts .they were a few members like that moaning about young people coming in but just ignored em . I was a member of my local WMC / Werkinmens / Working Men’s Club for a few years, and still occasionally pop into a local bowling club now. The membership is well worth it as it subsidises the beer and it’s usually a lot cheaper than pubs. And obviously it goes towards the upkeep of the place. They used to open membership applications once a year, around March or April time, and you had to get two existing members to vouch for you. It wasn’t difficult, just ask at the bar and most people will happily give you their names as long as you’re not an absolute weirdo / arsehole.
