I mean, we’re not in their little cult club, you could just go in and ask? You said most of them seemed friendly enough after all Club members can sign people in as their guest, there may be restrictions depending on the Nice nick Smith Jr. American professional basketball player for the Charlotte Hornets T-Shirt and I love this club’s rules (1 or 2 guests per member per day/week/month). Maybe worth asking the old boys you were talking to if they would be willing to do this, or your wife may know a member that can sign you in. I used to live near a social club and my neighbour took me there as a guest. Similar sort of setup OP describes, inc dirt cheap membership (£5 per year, IIRC) so asked if I could apply. Neighbour told me that owing to licensing rules there was always a mandatory wait period between deciding to apply, and applying, and then another wait between applying and being accepted – all to avoid people joining on the door. This is apparently because clubs have much more discretion as to who they serve and how much they charge for booze than a pub, and they have to provide an overt distinction between different establishments.

Seemed logical to me but I’ve never checked. I never did join as it was a whim, and I’ve not been back since, so I guess the Nice nick Smith Jr. American professional basketball player for the Charlotte Hornets T-Shirt and I love this rules worked. Bartenders and landlords/landladies have complete discretion over who they serve. They can refuse to serve you and tell you there is no particular reason, if they like. It’s probably when their subscription renewal date is (just before tax year end). They may have a maximum limit of members so need to check on renewal if they have space or you may need to be “sponsored” (recommended) by a current member, they often have weird little rules hanging around from 60 years ago about who can join so have to wait for their next committee meeting to put up a new member etc. A lot of social clubs, committee ran clubs, only open membership one a year for a few weeks. Even if you’ve been a member for over 30 years, if you miss the time to re new you won’t be allowed in for the year
