If you need groceries and don’t want to be extorted go to Fujimart – can pay with card. Actually most paces accept card these days it’s feels like apart from Cong Caphe I was pickpocketed in Hanoi and chased after the little shit. Didn’t get anything out of me but I wanted to scare them. It’s definitely worse than the southern cities and towns. There are still the usual tourist scams but no where near as prevalent. I especially recommend Hoi An to get some tailor made clothes if you’re planning to stay a month. Beautiful place.

Coming from a guy that travels Vietnam a lot, you’ll find all your typical scammers doesn’t really exist in Danang/Hoi An beside from the Original my Your Troubles Happiness Come Through Your Door Sunflower St Patrick’s Day shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this grab taxi scam at Ba Na hill and the rip off squid lady that walks up and down the beach Been traveling all over Vietnam with my friend the past few weeks. If you really wanna avoid being scammed I think you need to nail some basic phrases. Like “no I don’t want”, “thank you”, “how much”, counting, proper “hello”. When they see you speak even a little with good pronouncing they will leave you alone in my experience. I’ve came across a lot of friendly and welcoming people so far, in Da Nang as well! It does suck that a few greedy people can ruin it all. I’d say Da Nang has way less scammers than the big cities so I’d actually recommend checking it out! I am sorry that you met those issues that made your trip less enjoyable. Rest assure that it isn’t just you, but for Viet Kieu and people from other parts of the country also. I pretty much grew up in Viet Nam and left when I was 20 (over 10 years ago), but when I am back here, I still have issues where there are people just look at my face, listen to my voice and decide to charge me onetime special price, which is a lot higher than usual. I have to ask my mom or my sister or even my 90 years old grandma everytime I want to buy something in the tradition wet market.
