I think if you’re doing a handbrake turn you have to press the button to apply the brakes quickly enough. I’ve got an e-brake now so that’s all irrelevant. In the USA it is known as the “emergency brake” and is only really meant to be used when the service brake fails and the driver needs to stop the car. They are instructed to pull, hard, and to let it lock as the purpose is to stop the car as quickly as feasible. In the UK with your “hand brake” I think you can use it any way that you like. Just be aware, if it’s not put fully back down then you will wear out your rear drums or start a fire when you resume driving. I hold the button. It’s what Pete the driving instructor showed me on my first lesson and I’ve never been brave enough to go against the Word of Pete.

Changing new cars next month… going from 6 years of a button handbrake to a handle one again. Undo one of those, replace the e brake knob and it allowed you to pull the handle up to initiate a drift, and then release the handle and it would go back to its regular down position by itself. My partner at the time I was learning always got really annoyed because ‘The button will wear out sooner than the ratchet’ but that wasn’t why I did it, it was simply because the ratcheting noise is awful in the confines of a car!
