Take the out of court settlement. As a former Revenue Protection Inspector, I often came across passengers overriding further than their ticket/pass allowed. You should have just accepted the initial penalty instead of letting it escalate. It has always been the passenger’s responsibility (harsh as it may seem) to ensure the correct ticket was purchased for the journey taken. It’s a great offer. It would cost you so much more to lose in court. Take it and say onnnnneee hundred and egggggighhhty! Youbhabe better things in life to do I assume. Pay it and move on. We sometimes focus too much on unimportant stuff. Life is too short remember..

The short response to this is… do you want a criminal record for the Octopus 2023 Graphic Shirt and I love this next 10 years? If yes, go to court. If not – take the settlement. Been there, accidentally forgot to tap out on a DLR train in London, inspector saw me walking off without tapping (I was on the phone and it just slipped my mind) he ran up to me, by that point wouldn’t even let me demonstrate that I had tapped on. Week later I receive the same letter, explaining £1000 fine in court, It’s a strict liability offence so they don’t need to prove intent, simply did you ultimately end up fare dodging. I wasn’t given the option to pay a penalty either so had to hire a lawyer to get them to agree to an out of court settlement which set me back £750 (they then dropped the charge so no settlement cost).
