I felt this was a valid defence granted I ended up paying more than I would’ve in the Notts County Logo Shirt moreover I love this case of just buying a normal ticket, No it’s not, the offence is failing to produce a ticket when requested for the journey being undertaken. If, buts, maybes, aren’t considered. If it goes to court you’ll lose. Indeed, the exact wording is “Failure to bear on demand a valid ticket for your journey.”. Since OP failed to bear a valid ticket on demand, they’re guilty of the offence. They can see exactly what time you bought the ticket so if you later bought a valid Anytime Day ticket for your journey, that wouldn’t count. The only “exception” to this that I know of is that some train companies have policies for disabled passengers where if a disabled passenger carrying a valid Disabled Person’s Railcard doesn’t have a valid ticket, they’ll be able to buy a ticket at the normal price there and then (or be required to buy it at their destination).

The offence is absolute – you didn’t have a ticket. Just because you didn’t know/ignorance/stupidity etc is irrelevant. You ARE guilty. IANAL but your not guilty plea didn’t make sense. You still committed the Notts County Logo Shirt moreover I love this offence, regardless of the reason and you should definitely take the out of court settlement. I don’t know why you wouldn’t as you would 100% not win in court. You did commit the offence It always makes me wonder how lucky I’ve been so far to not get fines on trains. Over the years I’ve had several cases of wrong tickets, wrong trains, wrong stations. Only ever explained the situation and it’s all been good. Yet there are always people getting shafted for silly reasons. Closest I’ve come would be missing my train from south to north, being told I needed to buy another ticket except for the last section. Which I did, then got almost all the way there with no one checking my ticket. Only to get on the last section and have the ticket man tell me about 10 mins from the end of my journey that my earlier ticket wasn’t valid. Yo which I basically told him to do one, as id already paid for two tickets no one has even looked at and wasn’t paying more for another one. He said that seems fair, and off he went. Always worth trying to BS your way out of a situation.
