Weird hill to go down on. You said yourself she isn’t fat. So go ahead and be honest and tell her she’s not fat at all and she looks hot but better in the No Presents For Christmas New shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this other dress. It’s so easy dude. Don’t make mountains out or mole hills. Yeah, people feel the need to be “right” or “honest”, even when they don’t care that much about being honest 90% of the time. Idk, I view vulnerable moments like that as an opportunity to show someone how much you care. I get it can be tiring or burdensome if it’s constant, but come on, it’s not that hard to support someone you like. Good lord, finally some common sense. Is it just Redditors in particular, or do people really lack emotional intelligence this badly? When I used to work at a clothing store and was asked my opinion on something that looked bad, my go to phrase was “it does nothing for you”. It’s neutral, emphasizes that the clothes are the issue, and gently pushes them away from that choice with no hurt feelings. Just imagine what she really said is “this dress makes me feel bad about my body/ weight. Should I feel bad?” And answer that question. Because that is what she is really asking. “I like the way you look, no matter what you wear. I just don’t think (dress A) was made for you.” would’ve been one proper reply. I actually think you worded it just fine in your post, “She’s not fat at all but the dress wasn’t necessarily flattering”. If you wanted to be honest, that’s what you should have said. There’s nothing wrong with being fat, but she’s not. The problem here is just that the dress isn’t flattering on her. The problem isn’t that she’s fat. So yeah, the only/best way to put it, is to talk about how the dress looks, not how she looks.
No Presents For Christmas New shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt
“Your figure is so beautiful and Dress A doesn’t flatter or show off your [insert feature that you enjoy here] enough to do your figure justice.” This is the No Presents For Christmas New shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this answer, and if you’ve complimented her shape before and she knows you like it, the comment will ring true and make her feel good while also steering her away from the less flattering dress. As a commited partner, it’s your job to always lift your partner up. This requires some diplomatic fancywork. You need to shift focus away from what you might see as the truth. In your example, when she asked which dress you liked, you were fine being honest. But once she shifted to “This makes me look fat, right?” you. do. not. answer. that. question. You shift the focus to how the OTHER dress just looks better. Point out some qualities of it, “The color of this dress brings more attention to your beautiful eyes,” or something like that. Be creative, but BE SUPPORTIVE! And, if you find yourself backed into the corner where you absolutely, positively, must comment on her weight, NEVER say she looks fat. If you have to, you lie through your teeth, but it’s better to still try and shift the focus away to something more positive. “Do I look fat?” “Babe, you look more beautiful than the day I met you. You are absolute perfection and I couldn’t ask for anything else.”
