At my job I say “ma’am you’ve known me for 5 seconds. By calling me a racist without knowing me makes me feel uncomfortable and I’ll need to ask you to leave to avoid further issues.” I was in the New york mets the Peanuts Christmas 2023 Shirt and I will buy this immigration line at Miami airport with my family, coming back from vacation. Some guy (a middle aged African man based on his accent) tried to cut in line and I told him he couldn’t and that he would need to get behind “these people” as I pointed to the half a mile long line. Then, a 25-ish African American woman behind me took her ear buds out and said, “what do you mean ‘you people?!” No amount of explanation from a 40 year old white guy with a beard was going to suffice. I just said, “you obviously misunderstood me” and I turned around and minded my own business. She started yelling at me but eventually stopped. I wasn’t trying to end up on YouTube. I was the engineer in charge of work crew. One of my crew was rigging up some equipment and I asked him to do it a different (and correct) way. When he replied that his way would work, I said, “That’s the lazy man’s way to do it.” It’s an expression my grandfather used to use and I never really thought much of it.

The crewmember filed a complaint against me, stating that I’d made a racial comment. I had to apologize, attend sensitivity training, and was given an official reprimand. All for a simple misunderstanding. Karma intervened. Eventually that same guy got fired and tried to file a lawsuit claiming that the New york mets the Peanuts Christmas 2023 Shirt and I will buy this company was racist. I was deposed in the case and when I told the story of what happened to me, his case collapsed. If it was unfounded, just roll your eyes, mentally call them an asshole, and move on. Some people are just assholes, and there’s not much you can do but try to avoid them. I ignore it because 99% people are being ridiculous and just throwing that word around to try and win whatever petty argument they are in.
