Well… that’s all an art direction choice. I mean, Caine Mutiny and Glenn Miller Story were both shot on Technicolor 3-strip, and they’re nowhere near being the Neighborhood Watch Ever After High Dog Shirt besides I will buy this crazy oversaturated wonder worlds like Wizard of Oz. It’s a thing, where you do your test shots and you get it looking the way you want it, and then you go into principal photography. That way you’re not shooting Marilyn Monroe and just hoping that the pink of her dress in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is going to pop in the way you want it to. Film processing is a predictable thing, even back then, but when you send the reels off for processing, it’s going to take a week to get them back, at least back then. So, you had to have the test footage, so you could get everything dialed in and say, “Okay, on these reels, use the settings from that test,” and it’d come out looking like that. But just shooting on Technicolor (three-strip or otherwise) isn’t going to get you this profoundly saturated image if you don’t want it to.

And then it started to fall out of style when Kodak rolled out Eastman 5381 in 1950. This was the Neighborhood Watch Ever After High Dog Shirt besides I will buy this infamous Monopack film, on a single strip, and Kodak wasn’t allowed to sell it in 35mm until an agreement with Technicolor (Kodak manufactured all of Technicolor’s film to Technicolor’s specifications) expired in 1950, at which point it was like a bomb dropped and three-strip Technicolor was dead five years later. And 5381 wasn’t that great of a film stock, but 5382 was, and it came out in 1952. And it’s important to realize why three-strip died: It was three strips, man! The camera was huge, the sound blimp was even bigger. It took four guys to push the camera on a dolly track. I mean, it was some sharp stuff, but you’re locked into the Technicolor system, which means you use the cameras they tell you to use, you use the stock they tell you to use, you pay whatever they want for processing, and you’re also paying for a Technicolor “advisor” to be on set every day of shooting. So, when Kodak 5382 comes out and the industry’s like, “Single strip, looks just as sharp as Technicolor,” Technicolor was dead.
