I swear, gray is the design choice for people with no business making design choices. The first time I knew about it was when watching the special features of “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” and seeing Roger Deakins talk about how they filmed it, converted it to digital, and then applied the color correction to make it look old-timey. Color correction can be done to correct color (blue skies, green grass, white whites, black blacks as simple examples), or to use color grading as a dramatic or stylistic device, much in the same way sound design is used. Think time of day, location, mood, era, even linking color choices to characters, etc. The term color timing came about from technicians actually changing the duration of a film’s exposure through different filters during the film development process (Source: working professional colorist/member Colorist Society International).
