I wonder how many of the Music Band Singer Wishbone Ash Shirt so you should to go to store and get this “speak Italian” people have actually been in Italy. In a touristic country like Italy at least the phone responders should know a little bit of English. I do speak some Italian to order politely at a restaurant and say please and thank you, but in an emergency I would stick to english. Though it might really be, that they didn’t care about that particular fire (maybe planned) and before they explain it, they just hung up. In my experience, if you start with Italian and switch to English because of the language barrier, they won’t talk back in English. Half the people in the comments completely ignoring the fact that English is the lingua franca of the current era. It’s not about Americans or British people expecting others to speak their language. It’s about tourists expecting emergency services to speak at least to a decent level the most common vehicular language out there.

This. There should be at least someone at a dispatch center who speaks English, and maybe some other languages. Sometimes dispatch centers don’t want (read: government doesnt give enough money) to pay for people with language certificates (AFAIK a job that requires a foreign language has to pay more by law) I don’t get all the Music Band Singer Wishbone Ash Shirt so you should to go to store and get this “why you don’t speak Italian in Italy?” and “you can’t expect that other ppl speak English” comments… Englisch is spread around the whole word. Some basic communication skills won’t hurt you. And it’s not comparable with learning Italian, bc that’s a very specific language + Englisch can be counted as the unofficial world language. People defending italy so hard. Yet if the US didn’t have multilingual attendants they would call the US racist… why are we held to a different fucking standard?
